The rise and fall of a small film company
Grandeur et décadence d’un petit commerce de cinema. Regi: Jean-Luc Godard. Frankrike 1986. Fransk tale, engelsk tekst. DCP, 1t 32min.
Made in 1986 and never released theatrically, The Rise and Fall of a Small Cinema Company is a typically playful, witty JeanLuc Godard provocation. As a small production company struggles to mount a screen version of a James Hadley Chase potboiler, Godard mischievously deconstructs the filmmaking process. An absurdist, Brechtian satire becomes a lament for all the lost dreams of directors once beguiled by the magic of the movies. A comic, melancholy jolt of vintage Godard, with a spectacularly overwrought Jean-Pierre Leaud starring as exasperated director Gaspard Bazin.
