Early in the morning, Jorge harvests bananas for breakfast. He and his friends walk freely through the forest that surrounds their house: climbing trees, having fun, singing songs and splashing in the Amazon river.
This documentary is seen through the eyes of children. Everyday scenes describe the peaceful life of the Kechwa-Lamist Chiriqyako community, in the Peruvian Amazon, where they are dedicated to growing food. There is not much left over to sell, but money does not seem to be the most important thing.
Grammar of Gates
Spilletid: 21 min. Produsert: Mexico, 2019. Regi: Miguel Fernández de Castro. Tale: Spansk. Undertekst: Engelsk. Visningsformat: DCP.
Grammar of Gates explores the overlapping territories, languages and conflicts that mark the desert border between Mexico and the US which occupies the ancestral lands of the Tohono O’odham Nation, an indigenous people living on the Sonora-Arizona borderlands.
The artist weaves together excerpts from the film Geronimo Jones (1970) with drone and surveillance-like imagery of the landscape, drug smuggling routes and an affectless recitation of phrases taken from A Practical Spanish Grammar for Border Patrol Officers, the language of power that defines and controls the border gates.
Idolatría y hechicería. Primera acción para defender el territorio (Idolatry and sorcery. First action to defend the territory)
Spilletid: 10 min. Produsert: Mexico, 2018. Regi: Antonio Monroy. Tale: Spansk. Undertekst: Engelsk. Visningsformat: DCP.
In a context marked by the exploitation and degradation of the Mexican territory, an unexpected alliance emerges between ancestral communities and a provocative artist. Antonio Monroy catalyses the encounter between leaders of communities such as San Francisco Xochicuautla and San Salvador Atenco, who, rooted in millennia-old traditions, resist the onslaught of neoliberal modernity.
This documentary follows the gestation of a bold plan: the union of “Graniceros”, guardians of ancestral knowledge about water, to restore balance in the basin and halt destructive megaprojects. Between ceremonies in the mountains and the defence of the wisdom of the graniceros, the community struggles to preserve its legacy in the face of the dispossession of the common good and the fracture of its cosmogony.
Tiemperos del Antropoceno (Timekeepers of the Anthropocene): TEWAME TIYOLICHA KAWITL
Spilletid: 11 min. Produsert: Mexico, 2023. Regi: Federico Cuatlacualt. Tale: Nahuatl. Undertekst: Engelsk. Visningsformat: DCP.
On the sacred hill Tlacuaquilo, two time travelers materialize while a disembodied voice speaking Nahuatl reflects on the disastrous rippling effects of colonialism, the resistance and resilience of Indigenous people and cultures, and the complexity of navigating imposed borders (state, identity, linearity etc.).
The two travelers are actually many, consisting of numerous selves, and simultaneously exist in several places and times concurrently. Federico Cuatlacuatl Teles’ Tiempos Del Antropoceno presents a glimpse of these figures in full regalia, which incorporates colorful embroidery along with protective gear for interdimensional travel, as they stop by to deliver their crucial message en route to anytime and anywhere.
